Yan Zhang is currently heading “Wireless Networks” research group at Simula Research Laboratory, Norway; and an adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Informatics, the University of Oslo, Norway. He received PhD degree in School of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. From August 2006, he is working with Simula Research Laboratory, Norway. He is associate editor or on the editorial board of a number of international journals. He serves as organizing committee chairs and technical program committee for many international conferences. He received the Best Paper Award in IEEE AINA 2007. His research interests include resource, mobility, spectrum, data, energy, and security management in wireless networks and mobile computing. He is a senior member of IEEE and IEEE ComSoc.

Lecture Abstract

Cognitive Radio (CR) is emerging as a promising technology to address the spectrum congestion problem. A CR device is context-aware and capable of reconfiguration based on the external environments and its own property. Since cognitive networks are still in the early stage of research and development, there are a number of technical challenges to be addressed. In this talk, we will mainly present the challenges and solutions on resource allocation in cognitive radio networks. There are three parts in the talk. We will first introduce the basics of and key operations in cognitive radio networks. Then, we will focus on a parallel cooperative spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks, taking into account both sensing accuracy and sensing efficiency. Finally, we incorporate cognitive radio into femtocell networks and investigate the spectrum sharing problem in order to improve capacity.
